Giants of Harfang

The Silver Chair

The Giants of Harfang are implicated in the Green Witch’s scheme to invade and rule Narnia. Their alliance with the Witch connects the dangers faced by Jill, Eustace, and Puddleglum at Harfang to the larger plot unfolding beneath Narnia: the Witch meant to use the enchanted Prince Rilian as a powerless king over his own country.

Place in the Witch’s Plan

After Rilian is rescued, he recounts the adventure to the older and wiser Beasts and Dwarfs. They piece together the Witch’s design: she had dug beneath Narnia and planned to break out and rule it through Rilian, who had never realized that the country she intended him to rule was his own. The Giants of Harfang are identified as her allies in this scheme, linking the travelers’ encounter with them to the attempted underground invasion.

Alliance and Significance

The oldest Dwarf draws a broader lesson from the plot: “those Northern Witches always mean the same thing, but in every age they have a different plan for getting it.” The Giants’ alliance with the Witch is one element of that recurring strategy. Their role shows that the danger at Harfang was not an isolated threat to the travelers; it belonged to a coordinated effort to seize Narnia through deception and a captive, enchanted ruler.
